Tally of modern misery

Not by accident, a meme

Recent disasters worldwide

2003 -- European heat wave
2003 -- Bam earthquake
2004 -- Indian Ocean tsunami
2005 -- Hurricane Katrina
2005 -- Kashmir earthquake
2008 -- Myanmar cyclone Nargis
2008 -- Sichuan earthquake
2009 -- Australian Black Saturday bushfires
2010 -- Iceland volcano eruption
2010 -- Deepwater Horizon oil spill
2010 -- Russian heat wave
2010 -- Haiti earthquake
2011 -- Japanese earthquake and tsunami
2011 -- Fukushima Diachi nuclear disaster
2011 -- US tornados of April and May
2011 -- Great Mississippi River Floods
2011 -- Hurricane Irene
2011 -- Horn of Africa drought and famine
2011 -- Bastrop County (Texas) Complex fires

Of course this list is pretty US-centric and doesn't cover everything from the time period in question.  And some of the incidents were more ominous than disastrous, like the Icelandic volcano.  But the year isn't even over yet, and there'll no doubt be more to add to the list before we are done.

I didn't add Snowmageddon, which amazed and annoyed us here on the east coast in 2010, because it wasn't a disaster.  But it might have been a portent all the same..
